This is the title of the first of the “inner” chapters
of Chuang Tzu’s basic writings. The text is the condensed first
paragraph based on Burton Watson’s translation:
In the Northern Darkness there is a fish and his name is K’un
K’un changes and becomes a bird whose name is P’eng
And when he rises up and flies off, his wings are like clouds
over all the sky
And when the sea begins to move, this bird sets off
Towards the Southern darkness, which is the Pool of Heaven.
